Xbox 360 “Falcon” Rev Has HDMI

360 with HDMI

The ever-reliable ShackNews is confirming a long-simmering rumour that the “Falcon” 65nm revision to the Xbox 360 is indeed appearing in stores with an HDMI port:

Microsoft has confirmed the addition of HDMI ports to all newly manufactured Xbox 360 premium consoles. “Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience,” a Microsoft rep told Shacknews in an e-mailed statement. “Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand.”

This is great news for a number of reasons. One, a buyer can be pretty much 100% certain that they are getting the 65nm process with a Premium Xbox 360 if it has this port (see update below) – something that many buyers have been waiting for in light of Microsoft’s issues with the design of the console. 65nm chips increase the likelihood of the unit emitting less heat, ergo less hairdryer-like noise and potential for gamekilling thermal meltdown. And of course, HDMI is a welcome feature in and of itself for those of us using HD displays for our gaming needs.

The Core SKU will not be receiving this feature, pushing the so-called “tard pack” even further down in the desirability list. At any rate, no one should ever buy a Core model, particularly since MS has recently revealed that they have backtracked on their original promise to make sure that “every 360 game plays on every 360 system”. Expect the likes of GTA IV and Call of Duty 4 to require the harddrive attachment. Right now, the Premium is the best bet.

With the announced $100 price cut in Canada, this makes the Xbox 360 Premium model extremely tempting. Our own Premium 360 just red-ring’ed, like many so many others; here’s hoping the Falcon rev (a.k.a. Xbox 360 Reliable Edition™) puts that infernal, unblinking red stare behind us forever.

UPDATEJoystiq is now saying that HDMI-enabled 360s are NOT in fact a “Falcon” rev. So while our headline is still correct – all Falcon-rev 360s have HDMI – it would appear that some older “Zephyr” motherboards are getting the HDMI treatment as well. How perfectly confusing. The Falcon rev has yet to be seen in the wild, so to speak. This Zephyr revision (which really ought to have a new name since it is, y’know, different and all) supposedly is still 90nm process but has HDMI and the new extra heatsink.

  1. Zephyr does however have a second heat sink, and new paste to help prevent the RROD… seeing as it technically IS the elite motherboard with a smaller HDD attached.
