Rumour Xtreme: $400 PS3 by Xmas

giant grain of salt

Opposable Thumbs is reporting a rumour from their infamous mole, one that is a little hard to swallow – so I’ve included a picture of the world’s largest grain of salt with this post to keep things in perspective. I don’t normally like writing about rumours like this because they are often untrue, but OT’s guy seems to have a reliable track record.

The report:

Here’s how Sony’s platform pricing will shape up by the holiday shopping season:

  • 80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
  • 40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
  • Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
  • PlayStation 2: $99.99

The $99 PS2 is eminently believable, but if Sony somehow manages to get the PS3 down to $399 in time for the holiday season, that’s going to be like a nuclear bomb going off in the gaming industry. It will never outsell the Wii, but it would certainly deliver a critical hit to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales.

Again, it’s just a rumour.

  1. Can you confirm that the ability to swap out the internal drive is pretty easy? Or perhaps slap on a usb2 secondary drive? If so I may be able to justify this.. However after all the sub $200 HD-dvd players supposedly coming this xmas, and the idiotic studios not putting them out in both formats… I may be forced to wait till sanity pokes its head out.

  2. Sure… you can see how the HDD swap works yourself here:

One of the manuals that comes with the PS3 actually details this as well so its not like its an “unsupported feature”… there’s a big “HDD” sticker right on the side door.

I have plugged in an external USB2 HDD myself; as long as its FAT32 (yeah I know), it’ll work fine.

No comment on HD DVD. :)
