So That’s Two Dead Xbox 360s For Me So Far

And like a good little web denizen, the first thing I do is go bitch about it in my blog!

This refurbed 360 arrived less than a month ago. In that time I managed to play a handful of very good games on it. I made it through BioShock and Crackdown, and I had just purchased The Orange Box today so I played through Portal this afternoon.

There is no shortage of games on the 360. Thing is, the library could be the best in the world – it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference when the console dies, effectively reducing your library to zero.

I know. There are pages and pages of vitriol and angst about dead 360s out there on the fora and the blogs. I won’t add significantly to it here. I’ll just say this: it’s a shame. The library is pretty good. But, hardware-wise, this console is a piece of garbage.

There’s just no getting around that fact. It’s cheaply made and it shows like a motherfucker.

  1. Every time I turn my 360 on, it’ll make a noise or a series of noises that just make me cringe, waiting for something to go wrong. Still, nothing yet… but if this box crashes and burns on me while I’m playing through Assassin’s Creed (assuming Ubisoft is giving the PS3 version the short end of the stick) or Mass Effect, heads will fucking roll.

I can’t think of a single game I’m really looking forward to on the 360 after Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect, so if it crashes after I’ve beaten both of those, I’ll probably be OK. Is there some reason why there are so few games announced for the 360 in 2008? Or does it just feel that way?

I suppose Infinite Undiscovery and Lost Odyssey are coming out next year. Anything else?

  2. Not really. And that same thought did occur to me as well, about the release list.

Right now I want to play Mass Effect of course, and I hope that MS will get a replacement 360 to me in time to play that game. But that is less that 4 weeks away, and the first dead 360 took 6 weeks for them to replace… sigh.

After that, there is nothing on my Xbox 360 radar other than Assassin’s Creed as you mentioned. Practically every interesting title I see on the release list is cross-platform: Burnout Paradise, DMC4, Army of Two, Fallout 3… I’m going to wait and see on Lost Odyssey and (the hilariously named) Infinite Undiscovery.

But on the PS3: jesus, it’s a tsunami. All of those mentioned above plus exclusives: LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, inFamous, Silent Hill 5, Metal Gear Solid 4 (and MGS Online)… and that’s just by Q1.

In fact, now that I think of it, the list is so wildly out of proportion that I may need to do a post on that ;)

(There’s not much to speak of on the Wii list either but it follows a much stranger pattern of title announcements…. things get announced all the time, like Okami the other day.)

  3. I feel your pain - I got my first replacement box, played 4 hours on it and it died. I’m more annoyed that my replacement box was manufactured in 2006, which likely means it’s gonna blow up soon. The good news is that as soon as I sent my second dead box in, they sent the replacement back the next day. Literally - 2d after I sent it off I had the new one back.

I bought a PS3 when the second one blew up, then a PSP shortly after. Now I find the 360 is collecting dust. I won’t get into the holy war, but all I can say is that the PS3 doesn’t sound like a freakin jet engine when it starts up, and games like Resistance and Ratchet & Clank are freakin awesome and well ahead of anything on the 360.

Give your PS3 more lovin and wait for the 360 to mature…

  4. You know every time i see that image (of the 360 ring of death), i can’t help but think that it must be the same shade of red as a 360 buyer’s anus (aka HALO) by now. Especially after being “cornholed” by M$ so hard for all the extra add-ons.

    Ouch … looks sore.

  5. Welcome to the club!

  6. I don’t like this club!!

  7. I would suggest the best buy rental program if you feel the need to play on your x-boxen… I think it is up to 30 days to return (or perhaps only 14), either way you can do best buy then future-shop, that outta do till the re-re-furb comes back.. And just think of all the extra karma points for tossing back the 360’s and adding some pithy quotes…

  8. Why not go to Costco? A 360 is a little bit more expensive but…They have a one year return policy last I checked. A friend of mine used to return all his old gear before the return date expires, gets his money back, in full, and then buys the same or the new model, which also may have dropped in price, so money in pocket.

Its always a new item. Not some re- re-refurbished prostitute from the launch era
