What’s this? More fodder for my inner art whore?

I’ve been accused at times of being a graphics whore. But in reality, what I’m a whore for is the art itself. Technically impressive games can bore the crap out of me if the art isn’t up to snuff and great art can make a relatively simplilstic design stand out for me. I can tell you that the art for this game is doing the trick.

So what is this game exactly? While it’s using 3D graphics, this is a strictly 2D puzzle platformer called Trine from Finnish developer Frozenbyte whose only previous title is the overhead PC shooter Shadowgrounds.

You choose from one of four character classes which you can swap on the fly and create and destroy objects to solve puzzles. Kind of like Braid, only with an objection creation mechanic instead of the various time mechanics.

While I think Braid is a great game and I love the artwork involved… I bet Jonathan Blow could have almost halved development time if he went with 3D artwork like what’s on display here in Trine. Set to be released in the second quarter of ‘09 for the PC and the PlayStation Network, this is definitely a title I’ll be keeping an eye on.
